Making amends29 Posted 12/29/06 @ 1:09 am PST A few days ago, I was called out in public for being a bad blogger. "Dude! You never update your website thing! Come ooonnnnnnn!" This, very drunkenly, was delivered by a high school pal of mine - a friend I hadn't seen in years, but one who apparently has been keeping track of me online. It was a little surprising - I've only recently come to terms with the fact that people actually watch the tv show, and I don't know if I'm prepared to accept that real live people read this website. When I look at my traffic maps (I'm huge in Turkey!), I assume it's just my mom, secretly traveling around the world, logging in multiple times from various internet cafes. Later that same night, though (the Saturday before Christmas, the one night when Charleston, WV bars jack their cover charges up to profit off of the sudden influx of young people), I was confronted by another friend of mine, one who also took issue with my online activity. For Daniel, it wasn't so much my lack of posting, but what I HAD posted. A long time ago, Current made me do a fill-in-the-blank profile. One of questions asked about the 'worst job' I'd ever had - without any truly great (and brief) stories, I wrote something about a bank I had worked at the summer after graduation. Daniel had gotten me that job (seven years ago), and he was pissed. How could THAT be my worst job ever? That summer ruled. He refused to accept how boring our days of microfilm and filing were, and has demanded that my internet dissing of One Valley Bank (and, by extension, him) be settled with an online, public apology. His mock-outrage continued until I agreed, and so, in case I ever need summer employment in the financial sector again, I am sorry, Daniel. To everyone else, I am sorry you had to read that. Anyway, I HAVE been pretty terrible about updating. That's mostly because things have been pretty crazy recently. At the beginning of the month, Current decided to end its partnership with Yahoo! While I can't speak too much about the motivations behind that decision, the official PR line published at the time was: "Current is exploring better opportunities to distribute our content." That's true. And, for now, that means I'm back hosting/producing Google Current at the top of the hour (available online here). Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting, super-secret developments in early 07. I'll probably blog about them several months after they've already happened. |
