The Boss's Book
Posted 05/29/07 @ 11:37 am PST
Over the long weekend, I had the chance to read Al Gore's An Assault on Reason.  Thought it was fantastic, although I realize any review I might give can't be seen as entirely objective, since, technically, I work for the guy.

Towards the end of the book, Gore actually spends a couple of paragraphs describing what's important about Current TV.  It's worth reading if you've ever wondered why on earth the former Vice President of the United States thought it would be a good idea to get into the TV biz.

I believe Current TV is demonstrating that democratizing television can facilitate widespread participation in our national discourse.  We are trying to work within the medium of television to re-create a multiway conversation that includes individuals and operates according to a meritocracy of ideas.  There is a high degree of untapped creativity, intelligence, and talent, especially among young adults.  We invite our viewers--and the public at larg--to tell their stories on video and submit them to air on the network.  Our goal is not political or ideological.

The point is to foster a cornucopia of points of view and fresh perspectives that force people in rigid frameworks to reassess everything.  Connecting individuals to the conversation of democracy over the medium that is by far the most important is a way of opening up this medium so individuals can get back into the conversation with whatever points of view they wish to bring to it.
